The good news is that since the Hague Convention came into effect in China on November 7, 2023, the cumbersome “double authentication” (Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication + Canadian embassy/consulate authentication) is a thing of the past. Now, you only need to complete one step in China—an Apostille, also known as “Hague Apostille”—and your documents can be used in Canada.
However, many people mistakenly believe that “as long as the Hague Apostille is obtained in China, the document will definitely be usable in Canada.”
This is a huge misconception!

Step 1: How to obtain Hague Apostille certification (with additional certificate) in China?
This process takes place in China. In short:
- Document Preparation: You will need to prepare the original documents. Please note that some documents (such as household registration books and certain certificates) may not be directly authenticated and require a “notarized document for foreign use” to be obtained from a notary office in China first.
- Submitting the application: Submit the prepared documents/notarized certificate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or its authorized provincial or municipal foreign affairs offices. They are the only designated agencies for issuing supplementary certificates.
- Obtaining the certificate: After payment, the Foreign Affairs Office will attach a standard supplementary certificate to your documents, certifying that the seal and signature of the notary office or relevant institution on the documents are authentic.
The process itself is not complicated, but the real challenge lies in ensuring that the document you prepare meets Canadian standards from the outset.
